There’s a fresh face coming to Wake Forest’s quarterback position.
Steele Pizzella announced his commitment to Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon. Pizzella signed with Washington State earlier this month, but that was before coach Jake Dickert left the Cougars for Wake Forest.
Pizzella was a 3-star recruit from Simi Valley, Calif., and played at Notre Dame High School. In his senior season, he completed 183 of 301 passes for 2,610 yards and 29 touchdowns; he also rushed for 1,040 yards and eight touchdowns.
He’s the second member of Washington State’s recruiting class to flip to the Deacons, joining wide receiver Jack Foley.
Wake’s quarterback situation is an interesting one to sort out — and appears far from being sorted out.
The only QBs to attempt a pass for Wake Forest this past season, Hank Bachmeier and Michael Kern, were both sixth-year seniors who are out of eligibility. Jeremy Hecklinski was being groomed to take over next season (through a likely QB competition), but that was while Dave Clawson remained Wake’s coach.
Now, with Dickert taking over and installing a new offense, the position is in flux. Right now, the Deacons’ quarterback position next season stands to have Hecklinski, Pizzella, Tyler Mizzell and Elijiah Oehlke — none of whom has attempted a pass in a collegiate game.
