NASSAU, The Bahamas - The Wake Forest men’s basketball team captured its second win of its tour of the Bahamas with a 90-78 victory over Bahamian club CTG Knights Tuesday night at the Sir Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium. Bryant Crawford scored 20 points to lead five Demon Deacons in double figure scoring.
“When you see a team like that one, you don’t judge a book by its cover,” said head coach Danny Manning. “The guy who scored a lot of points tonight is the starting power forward on their national team. Those guys were grown men out there with a lot of experience. I thought it was a good win for us. We had to fight through some adversity and found a way, but we have to get better in a lot of aspects, both offensively and defensively. ”
John Collins added 15 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while Keyshawn Woods scored 14 points. Austin Arians had 13 points and had a team-high five assists. Mitchell Wilbekin scored 10 points.
The CTG Knights got out to a quick start and led for most of the first quarter, by as many as five points. The Deacs answered with a late rally to take a 28-25 lead at the end of the period. Wake Forest held that lead throughout the second 10 minutes and took a 46-38 advantage into halftime. Collins and Crawford each scored 11 first-half points to lead the Deacs.
The Demon Deacons hit five three-pointers in the third quarter to take a 17-point lead at 65-48, but a late 11-0 Knights run cut the advantage to just six points at the end of the quarter, 67-61. Wake Forest held off the Knights in the final quarter to post the 12-point win, led by Wilbekin, who had seven of his 10 points in the final period.
“The new guys were good tonight,” said Manning. “Keyshawn was a guy who took on a leadership role last year when he was on the scout team. Austin came in with a college degree and has a lot of experience. Those guys are very confident in their abilities.”
Bahamian National Team member Eugene Bain, a former NAIA All-American at Bellevue University in Nebraska, led the CTG Knights with a game-high 32 points and 11 rebounds.
Demon Deacons will play their final game of the tour against another Bahamian club, The Real Deal Shockers, on Thursday at 7 p.m.
