Wake Forest versus Clemson: post-game Q-&-A's
Winston-Salem, NC - Wake Forest (15-13, 5-10 ACC) put an end to a tumultuous month-long string of losing when the Demon Deacons overcame their rebounding struggles and a nine-point deficit to beat Clemson 62-57.
Players and coaches spoke with the media after the game.
Wake Forest head coach Jeff Bzdelik
On the victory going forward: "Well, I just think that at one time we were 14-6 and we've played some tough teams and I just think we lost our confidence. [Our confidence] was shaken, which happens to anybody."
On the different level of energy after the half: "Again, confidence is such a fragile thing at any level with any athlete and you have to play with great confidence and you have to play fearless and not fearful."
Wake Forest forward Travis McKie
On the energy after the half time: "I mean everybody was just yelling. It was kind of annoying. The energy was definitely there. We felt like we could get these guys and the zone, I think, flustered them a lot and we got the crowd into it. It was a good win for us and the energy was definitely there for us."
On guarding K.J. McDaniels: "Well, just not letting him get offensive rebounds. That's what he keys himself of. He's a really good player. They run their offense through him but you know he gets going by himself so you just have to keep a body on him and make him work for tough shots."
Wake Forest guard Codi Miller-McIntyre
On the game: "I believe this game we actually ran our offense. Of course, there were a couple times here and there that we would shoot early or shoot quick, but I believe this time we were really patient with offense and believed in the offense we were running."
On the last seven games: "I think a lot of times we had our game sped up a little bit where when they would get to us we would break the play and try to make something happen. That's what a lot of teams want to do to us but today everybody was calm, level headed, and handled their pressure well."
Wake Forest forward Arnaud Adala Moto
On the overall win: "This was a huge win. They beat us last year and early this year, so we just wanted to get them back. We knew we owed them this one. We felt really good."
On the adjustments made when they were down: "We said we have to rebound. In the second half we out rebounded them, so that was the key."
On the game changing plays made in the second half: "It goes back to rebounding. We went in the zone together. We rebounded and stayed aggressive."
On facing Boston College on Saturday: "We feel good and we are going to be ready for BC. They beat us last year, so we are really going to work hard on Saturday."
Wake Forest forward Tyler Cavanaugh
On the game overall: "I was really proud of how we fought tonight and battled our way through it. We came out flat and then I though after half time our starters got us going real well and then we just continued with our flow and we rebounded much better in the second half."
On hitting some big shots: "Well, the three I had, Codi made a great drive to the base line and kicked it out to me and it went down. When your first shot goes down that helps the mojo and then they closed out on me a little too hard and I got to the rim a little bit. It was just a great team win. I thought we were all fantastic and that we battled hard."
Clemson head coach Brad Brownell
Opening statement: "Give Jeff Bzdelik, his staff, and his players a lot of credit tonight. They played very well especially in the second half and really responded after a difficult loss at North Carolina. I thought they came ready to play. We did some decent things in the first half and built a little bit of a lead but the first four minutes were critical."
"We talked about that in the locker room at half time. The Wake players just made some really good plays early on in the game. We got out of character a little bit, settled for too many jump shots against a zone and we did not respond as well as we needed too. They executed very well offensively. Jeff and his staff have recruited some very good young players. Their sophomore class is really good. Those guys played with a lot of confidence."
