No answer for the Noles
Jim Grobe said no question No. 3 Florida State (9-0, 7-0 ACC) is the best team he has seen in his 13-year tenure as Wake Forest's head coach following the Demon Deacons 59-3 loss to the Seminoles.Winston-Salem, NC -
To drive this home even further FSU lost 11 players to the NFL Draft from last season's 12-2 ACC Champion and Orange Bowl winning team.
Statistics can often be deceiving. The Deacs (4-6, 2-5 ACC) claimed a 31:02 to 28:58-edge in time of possession, and yielded only 296 yards of total offense to the Noles. However, one statistic that was not deceiving was Wake's seven turnovers (six interceptions and one fumble).
"I think we have gone a whole season before without seven turnovers," Grobe said. "We had as many turnovers today that we nearly have had in a whole season before. I think we had five interceptions total coming in the game today. It was just a lot of errors today. The defense had hardly been on the field. I don't know what else to say, but turnovers really hurt."
Wake Forest's first five possessions resulted in a three-and-out, three interceptions and a fumble, resulting in 35 points in 7:16 of possession time for the Seminoles.
FSU's defense was one interception shy of tying Wake's number of completions (seven).
Short fields, defensive touchdowns, a big lead and the good graces of Jimbo Fisher kept Wake Forest from seeing Heisman hopeful Jameis Winston more than it would want to.
The redshirt freshman quarterback completed 17-28 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns to one interception before exiting midway through the third quarter.
"I thought he was solid," Fisher said. "He did some really nice things, but did some things I didn't like. I thought at times he made some decisions and got a little greedy. I think he needs to understand that. He's got to play the game. The game is bigger than me as a coach, bigger than him as a player."
Speaking of big this was the largest amount of points Wake has allowed at BB&T Field and its 56-point margin of defeat is the worst in school history.
