Kemp talks Southern Miss commitment

Over the weekend Southern Miss hosted an on campus recruiting for many of the top prospects on their recruiting board. One prospect in attendance for "Black Ops Day" was Demopolis (Ala.) High stand out athlete Demetrius Kemp.

During the event Kemp pledged his services to the Golden Eagles.

"I kind of had my mind made up before I went over," he said in an interview with BigGoldNation.com. "I felt like then (at the event) would be the right time to do it...."

Kemp had mad a previous visit to Southern Miss and was familiar with the campus and facilities.

"It was my second visit to campus," he said. "I went to a Junior Day there in June."

During the day chocked full of activities for recruits Kemp and his mother had a one-on-one meeting with Head Coach Todd Monken.

"When me and my mom were in the office meeting with Coach Monken," he said. "That's when I committed."

"The coaches were all real excited when I committed," he continued.

With his commitment known and his place on the commitment board no longer in doubt Kemp was free to enjoy the rest of the day with other Southern Miss commitments, prospects and players.

"It was so much fun," he said. "We had some competitions, we were shooting basketball and playing laser tag."

"It was a good opportunity to get to hang out and get to know the other guys," Kemp said.

Southern Miss wasn't the only program to offer the talented prospect. The Eagles' primary competition came from Georgia Tech, but he also sported offers from Arkansas State, South Alabama and several top FCS programs.

When asked what set Southern Miss apart from the competition he had this to say.

"Coach Monken is a great guy", Kemp said. "He's the only head coach that I talk to a lot. It was him, Coach Thacker and Coach Wozniak. I talk to one of those guys at least every other day."

Southern Miss receivers coach John Wozniak serves as Kemp's recruiting coach, while he'll likely play for coach Andrew Thacker who serves as the safeties coach for the Eagles.
