Deacs roll over VMI
Winston-Salem, NC - Wake Forest (2-0) blew open a tie game with a 16-3 run to end the first half on its way to a 98-71 win over VMI (2-1).
"We did a really good job sticking to the game plan and that game plan was to defend the best we could to keep them in front of us, make them take contested shots and rebound the ball and run them back, but run them in a way that we attack the rim," Wake Forest head coach Jeff Bzdelik said.
And run the Demon Deacons did. Wake had a 26-8 edge in fast-break points, and also outscored the Keydets 58-18 in the paint.
Codi Miller-McIntyre led all scorers with 23 points. He also dished out seven assists to turnovers and pulled down six rebounds.
"I actually talked to Randolph Childress and I asked him how he put halves together, because last year what happened was I disappeared one half and I would show three or four minutes the next half and I would disappear again," Miller-McIntyre said.
"So I asked Randolph Childress how did he put halves together like that, and he just said calm down, calm yourself down before a game, think the game slowly, play it in your mind and that's kind of what I did coming into this game where it wasn't I went on a break for 14 points and disappeared. It was steadier from tip-off to ending."
The most dominant performance came from Devin Thomas, who scored 20 points and grabbed s career-high 17 rebounds (18 points and 15 rebounds in the by halftime).
"He [Bzdelik] told me good game [after the win over Colgate], and then he's like six rebounds? Come on you got to do better in a joking way," Thomas said. "I gotcha Coach, because that's the relationship he and I have. Hopefully he was happy with 17 [rebounds]. He was joking after the game, saying I should have got 20, but it's just a joke. We're all happy we won."
Tyler Cavanaugh and Travis McKie added balance with 11 points apiece, while Miles Overton chipped in nine points.
